DISC assessment for sales: know your natural style, then build the capabilities that matter

Discover how you naturally work with buyers, see where your capability stands today, and choose what to build first.

Before you develop new sales skills, it helps to know where you’re starting from. This DISC assessment for sales shows what feels natural to you, which parts of a sales conversation take more conscious effort, and where your current strengths sit, so your learning, coaching, and role practice go exactly where they count.

It brings together Extended DISC® and a Sales Competency Assessment, available on their own or inside the NeuroSales Consultative Selling System™, giving you a practical foundation that’s personal to you.

Why the NeuroSales Consultative Selling System™ starts with a DISC assessment for sales

You know your team could perform better, and it can be hard to name exactly what’s getting in the way. Perhaps a previous programme promised a lot and the energy faded within weeks; perhaps you were a strong seller yourself, and the coaching style that worked for you lands differently with each person on your team.

That’s why a DISC assessment for sales and a sales competency assessment are among the first steps in the NeuroSales Consultative Selling System™. Before you choose what to practise, you gather clear information about how you naturally operate and where your capability stands today, so every module that follows connects to your own results.

A good starting point answers four questions:

  1. What feels natural to you in a sales conversation?
  2. Which parts of the sales process take more conscious effort?
  3. Where are your current strengths?
  4. What might be getting in your way?

Your behavioural sales assessments answer all four questions, giving you a practical foundation for choosing where to focus first.

Getting match-fit: Why we start here

Getting started should spark curiosity. Seeing your own behavioural patterns and sales development areas can be surprisingly enjoyable: it puts words to experiences you recognise and often gives you an immediate “that explains it” moment.

More importantly, it gives your learning a purpose. As you move through the system, you can connect each module, workbook, quiz, and role practice session (including practice with your customised AI Sales Coach) to the capabilities you’ve chosen to develop, so you always know why you’re working on a particular conversation or mindset.

That’s what getting match-fit means here: understanding your starting position, choosing the right areas to work on, and building capability through repeated application. You begin the journey with a clearer picture of yourself and a practical direction for what comes next.

Four connected reports; one complete DISC assessment for sales

There are four connected views, and each one builds on the last:

  • Extended DISC® Behavioural Profile: How you naturally operate.
  • Sales 18 Report: How your style meets 18 important sales activities.
  • Sales Competency Assessment: Where your capability stands today.
  • Combination Report: Natural tendency and current capability side by side.

You complete the DISC assessment online, then explore your results with an AI-based debrief or a debrief with an accredited consultant. Inside the NeuroSales Consultative Selling System™, the modules, workbooks, and quizzes that follow put those results to work.

Extended DISC® behavioural profile: Understand how you naturally operate

The Extended DISC® Behavioural Profile is a DISC profile analysis of your natural behavioural style and how you may be adapting it in your current environment. It explores the four familiar DISC styles (D-style Dominance, I-style Influence, S-style Steadiness, and C-style Compliance) while recognising that most people are a blend of styles.

The report gives you language for things you may have noticed but struggled to explain:

  • How you prefer to communicate, make decisions, and work with others.
  • What motivates or drains you.
  • How you may respond under pressure.
  • Why a sales approach that feels comfortable to a colleague may feel less natural to you.

In sales, this awareness becomes useful straight away. You can look at how you build rapport, ask questions, present ideas, and respond when a buyer needs a different pace or level of detail, then practise adapting to a customer’s style while staying true to your own.

Your Extended DISC® report is a starting point for understanding behaviour, and what you can learn or achieve remains wide open.

Sales 18: See how your natural style meets the demands of selling

This is where a DISC assessment for sales becomes tailored to the role. The Sales 18 Report takes that behavioural insight into the sales environment and looks at your natural alignment with 18 important sales activities, such as prospecting, closing, and relationship building, across the sales cycle, which turns a broad question into a specific one: which activities are likely to feel natural to you, and which might need more deliberate practice?

Your own pattern will be individual. It might look like this:

  • You find it easy to start conversations, and slowing down to explore a buyer’s needs takes more attention.
  • You enjoy building relationships, and challenging a buyer’s thinking or asking for a decision takes more energy.

Sales 18 helps explain the effort behind different parts of the role. An activity that takes more energy can still become a strength, and knowing it needs conscious attention lets you practise it with purpose, retiring the old idea that some people are simply ‘born sellers’.

For a sales leader or coach, the report adds useful context. Two people may need to improve the same part of the sales process yet benefit from different coaching approaches, because their natural tendencies differ.

Sales competency assessment: Take a snapshot of current capability

Natural tendencies tell only part of the story. The Sales Competency Assessment is a sales capability assessment that explores where you stand now across 18 competencies, along with 12 underlying sales mindsets: the beliefs and habits your brain has practised into place.

The assessment reflects your own perception of your skills, which gives you insight into your self-confidence as well as your areas for growth.

The 18 competencies are:

  • Prospecting
  • Qualifying
  • Building rapport
  • Following the sales process
  • Goal orientation
  • Needing approval
  • Controlling the sales process
  • Handling objections
  • Questioning effectiveness
  • Active listening
  • Critical thinking
  • Initiative
  • Presenting
  • Time management
  • Dealing with failure
  • Determined competitiveness
  • Money concept
  • Emotional distance.

It invites you to reflect on where you feel capable and consistent, where you may hesitate, and which beliefs or habits could be shaping your performance. Its development insights then turn that snapshot into practical coaching priorities.

This matters because a skills gap and a mindset barrier call for different kinds of support:

  • Someone may know how to handle an objection and avoid the conversation because they dislike tension.
  • Another person may feel comfortable having the conversation and need a stronger method.

The assessment gives you and your coach a way to explore what sits beneath the result. It also makes development more manageable: you can choose two capabilities that matter most for your role and goals at your debrief, then work on them through the programme and in real sales conversations, instead of tackling all 18 areas at once.

Combination report: Connect natural tendency with current capability

The Combination Report brings the Sales 18 behavioural view together with the Sales Competency Assessment, and this is where the picture becomes especially useful for development. Looking at the two views side by side helps you ask better questions:

  • Are you making full use of your natural strengths?
  • Have you already built a strong skill in an area that takes more conscious effort?
  • Is a lower competency score pointing to a skill to practise, a mindset to explore, or both?

The combination helps your coach or sales leader personalise your development. Instead of improvising every coaching conversation, or offering the same advice to everyone, you can agree on the next capability to build, the type of practice that will help, and how to apply it in your own sales environment.

Together, these reports turn a DISC assessment for sales into insight and direction, and the conversations and actions that follow create the value. They point the way, and your potential remains yours to shape.

Why you can trust your Extended DISC® results

Extended DISC® has been used for more than 30 years. Finnish consultant Jukka Sappinen developed it in the 1990s, building on the DISC model that psychologist William Moulton Marston described in his 1928 book Emotions of Normal People.

Since then, ongoing research has tested how well it works:

  • - Original university validation: The method was first validated with the University of Oulu in Finland, and Extended DISC International continues to update its validation studies.
  • - Reliable results: In the 2019 validation study, the four DISC dimensions scored a Cronbach’s alpha (a measure of internal consistency) between 0.79 and 0.85, above the 0.70 generally considered acceptable.
  • - Large samples: The 2019 study analysed results from 886,943 participants across 77 languages.
  • - Built-in consistency check: If your answers form an inconsistent pattern, the system withholds the report instead of guessing your style.
  • - 160 behavioural styles: Your Extended DISC® report goes beyond four boxes, describing 160 styles within the D, I, S, and C framework.
  • - Natural and adjusted views: You see how you naturally prefer to behave, and how you’re adjusting to your current environment.

Extended DISC® measures behavioural tendencies rather than intelligence, skills, or attitudes. That’s why the Sales Competency Assessment sits alongside it, and why the debrief matters: it puts your results in context.

Five accreditations behind your DISC assessment for sales

Your Extended DISC® reports come from a well-qualified source: Jason Dinan holds five accreditations, and each one connects to the assessments and system you'll use:

  • Master Neuroplastician (M.npn): The highest practitioner designation issued by the npnInstitute.
  • Accredited Training and Service Provider: Listed with the npnInstitute directory.
  • Extended DISC® Accredited Consultant: Accredited in the behavioural assessments behind your Extended DISC® reports.
  • FinxS® Accredited Consultant: Accredited in the cloud-based assessment platform that powers the Extended DISC® and Sales Competence assessments.
  • Sales Competence Accredited Consultant: Accredited in the assessment of sales competence across 18 areas, along with the underlying sales mindsets that shape performance.

Together, these accreditations give you an expert grounding in behavioural assessment, sales capability, and applied neuroscience. Your results connect directly to a system built on how the brain forms habits, processes risk, and changes behaviour under pressure.

That grounding also shapes how the assessments are used. This DISC assessment for sales works as a DISC assessment for teams as much as for individuals, so a sales leader can see not just how one person operates, but how an entire team's behavioural styles interact under pressure.

Across 30+ years and most major B2B and B2C industries, Jason has contributed to more than $1.87 billion in additional sales for the organisations he has worked with. Read more about Jason Dinan and his credentials.

“Before an athlete takes the field, they get match-fit. Salespeople deserve the same.

That’s why every client starts here. Extended DISC® and the Sales Competency Assessment take the guesswork and the luck out of knowing where to focus, so your effort goes to the parts of selling that matter most for you.

Then we make role practice a religion. Your results show you what to practise, and the practice builds the skill.”

– Jason Dinan, M.npn, Founder, NeuroSales Capability Lab™

How Extended DISC® changes the way teams work together

Here's how Extended DISC® has changed the way clients work with the people around them:

“It’s helped my business partners understand each other better”

"Extended DISC is so helpful. Not just in understanding yourself, but for more effective communication with others. Being able to assess another person’s behaviour style is very helpful. I’ve used it with my business partners, and it’s helped us understand each other better, and we’ve found new ways of resolving issues. It’s very interesting and I’ve found it very valuable. It’s like Sun Tzu says in the Art of War: ‘If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle.’"

- Frank Xu, President of the New Zealand Chinese Building Industry Association (NZCBIA), Auckland, NZ

“Communication was often challenging. Now it is calm”

"I've known my Construction Manager for 22 years, but thanks to the Extended DISC® reports, we understand each other a lot better now. We got stuck in a rut in terms of communication; it was often challenging. With the new approach, our communication is calm. Everybody is valued equally, and we take the time to listen."
- Todd Flashman, Owner and Managing Director, Tomik, Waiheke Island, NZ
